Buff-coat
Heavy coat from buff-leather worn alone for light protection or under armor.
Coif
Hood of fabric or mail worn under a helmet. By the twelfth century it often incor­porated a ventail.
Stechhelm
A 'frog-mouthed' form of great helm which was worn specifically for Gestesch, bolted to the breastplate.
Ventail
An integral flap of mail attached to the coif in the thirteenth century; it could be drawn across the mouth to protect the lower face.
