Encyclopedia of historical weapons - Steel

An alloy of wrought iron and carbon, capable of being hardened by heating and then quenching (rapid cooling) in water. This hardening process could cause embrittlement; gentle reheating (tempering) increased the metal's resilience. These processes were well known in the Middle Ages. See wrought iron.
